Voted your number 01 favourite Staple lentil mix and all-round-family-pleaser. The pantry staple for when you need something nourishing but have zero energy. A combination of organic Australian red split lentils, organic sesame seeds and organic spices. Enjoy as a stand alone soup dish or with a side of rice.

To Make

To a medium sized saucepan add the Not So Dal mix, 1 can of diced tomatoes (or 1.5 cups of passata) and 2 cans (or 2.5 cups of water).

Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 mins or until the lentils are tender, stirring regularly. You may need to add some more boiling water if the dal thickens too quickly.

More boiling water can be added at the end of the cooking to make a soup.

*Alternatively, all of the ingredients can be thrown into a rice cooker and cooked on the ‘brown rice’ setting.

Serves four people.

To Eat

As a soup - with crusty bread on the side.

On a bed of rice - We love the Australian rain-fed medium brown or white rice.

To Serve

For creamy dal - add 0.5 cans of coconut milk towards the end of the cooking time.

With condiments - A combination of any of the following- chilli oil, a dollop of yoghurt or coconut cream, fresh coriander, toasted sesame seeds, a few drops of sesame oil, fresh diced cucumber, fresh spinach leaves, fried shallots, fresh lemon juice but it doesn't need a thing.

For breakfast - Sourdough toast, smeared with labne, warm dal, a fried egg, fresh coriander, finely diced red onion, chilli oil and a squeeze of lemon.
